VOLKSCAFES
VROUWENTONGEN & MANNENPRAAT
Volkscafés are part of our cultural heritage. They are places where everyone can casually drop in to quench their thirst with the quintessential pint or have a chat. Although the Volkscafés carries a long history and is a symbol of popular culture, it is under threat today. Every week, a few cafés are forced to close their doors — because the owner has passed away and no one wants to continue this unique ‘trade,’ because the Volkscafés is given a different purpose, or because it must make room for another bar.
Nonetheless, Volkscafés are still very much alive. Jimmy Kets captured about fifty Volkscafés in Flanders and Brussels.
