Miss Coast, Miss Glamour, Miss Strawberry: these are just a few of the titles you can win in Flanders. Beauty pageants are major (inter)national events, but they are equally organized by local cycling clubs. Yet, the contestants and their drive to be the prettiest are universal and found everywhere.

Jimmy Kets selected about ten typically Flemish beauty pageants for his new photobook. His photos show the competitions behind the scenes and on stage. Honest and revealing, stripped of glitter and glamour but always respectful, they depict the beauty contests in their true essence. The images are complemented by impressions from Kets himself, who attended these events from the front row. Flemish writer and performer Christophe Vekeman shared his perspective on this phenomenon, written in his characteristic humorous style.
